“Tridevi," for bassoon and piano

Tridevi, meaning "three goddesses" in Sanskrit, depicts the three primary goddesses in Hindu mythology. Saraswati is the goddess of music, education, and wisdom, with her symbols including the lotus flower and the swan. Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth and prosperity, with her festival coinciding with the plentiful resources of the harvest season. Kali is the deity tasked with the destruction of evil, and is depicted as a terrifying force of justice, with wild hair and her tongue sticking out.

This piece was a chance for me to acknowledge aspects of my heritage I previously had little experience with, sprinkling in traits of the Hindustani classical music I grew up listening to. Additionally, it serves as an exploration in the nuances of femininity in the classic mythology I had been exposed to growing up.
